Abstract

Ercole Silva, author of Dell’arte de’ Giardini inglesi (1801 and 1813), was a practical innovator in the park of his villa in Cinisello Balsamo, but also a fortunate theoretical popularizer.
He was able to reconcile the traditions of the past of the ‘Italian style’ garden with the new trends spread throughout Europe in the name of the ‘English garden’: a vegetable furniture and a more natural and spontaneous plant landscape apparently, in reality carefully controlled, manipulated and artificial, in which the inscribed monuments were focuses of interest that marked the paths.
