Abstract

The rhyton is a unique vessel shape that occurs in several Neolithic Cultures of the coast of the Adriatic and of the Greek Peninsula. It is also rather common to the Trieste Karst caves where it makes its appearance in the Vlaška horizon whose earliest dates fall within the middie and the third quarter of the seventh millennium BP. Very similar dates are also available for the Dalmatian Danilo Culture, while those of the central Bosnian Kakanj Culture, are slightly later. A well-dated, typical Kakanj rhyton recovered during the excavations at the Edera Cave in the Trieste Karst, has been analysed using thin section and SEM techniques. It resulted to be of local production. This paper discusses the origin, chronology, function and manufacture of these vessels that have often been interpreted as cultual vessels of Greek or Dalmatian origin.
