The forum is the heart of the Roman city: pre-eminently a public space, it has always been the centre of archaeological Iiterature. On the contrary less importance was given to some typical rooms of this urban area: the tabernae. Research originated from the study of Luni's shops has focused on the above-mentioned issue. The aim of this paper ís to illustrate – through an indexing of the forums of a few cities of the ltalian peninsula and Western provinces – a possibly complete description of these rooms. Special ottenttion is turned to their destination and to possible planimetríc and functional trasformation between the republican and imperial age.
