Abstract

Studies on the corpus of the red- figured vases known as phlyakes stressed the fact that there is a significant number of examples in which the phlyax or the comic mask, which belongs to the Dionysian sphere, is painted in scenes that are not strictly theater.

An analytical examination of these images, organized in tables attached hereto, led to the identification of four thematic groups that prove the link between Dionysus and his entourage. The data obtained from the study confirm that the relationship between the phlyakes and their god should be studied mainly in connection with the cult of Dionysus, and that it has its roots in the fact that the phlyax belongs to the Dionysian procession as some scholars had previously suggested.
