Abstract

During the 10th and 9th centuries B.C., trade between the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean is growing rapidly; at the same time, in many Aegean communities, élites or “proto-aristocracies” emerge. At lefkandi, the two historical phenomena are closely correlated. in this study, through a contextual analysis of funerary data, we try to reconstruct the social and cultural history of this euboean community, which maintains direct and permanent relations with the eastern Mediterranean in the early iron Age. the consumption of oriental items in the funerary ritual is a form of “materialization” of the ideology of the élite buried in the cemetery of toumba.
